Outside Drain Blocked in Wolverhampton — Gullies & External Drains
External drains and gullies take the surface water from yards, driveways, patios, and the water from downpipes. When they block, water can back up, pool near the property, or overflow across paths and drives. In Wolverhampton's older back-to-back terraces and through-terrace yards, a single shared gully often handles drainage from several properties — which makes blockages more impactful and more frequent.

Leaves and windblown debris are the most common cause, particularly in autumn. Properties under or near mature trees — common in the leafy western suburbs of Tettenhall and Penn, but also in the older residential streets across Whitmore Reans and Bushbury — can see a gully trap fill with compacted leaf mush within weeks during peak leaf fall. Once the trap is full, surface water has nowhere to go and backs up across the yard or path.
Grease and fat washed out through kitchen waste pipes, or poured directly onto yard drains, accumulate in the gully trap and the connecting pipe in much the same way as in internal kitchen drains. In Wolverhampton's hard-water supply area, limescale deposits in the gully trap compound the problem — scale builds up on the walls of the trap and the outlet, narrowing the bore and catching debris more readily. Soil and grit washed in from gravel paths, garden beds, or unmade yard surfaces also contribute, particularly in older terraced properties where the yard surface may not be fully contained.
What We Do
We start by lifting the gully cover and inspecting the trap. In most cases, accumulated debris in the trap is the primary cause of the blockage and removing it restores flow immediately. Where the trap alone is not the issue — or where the outlet pipe from the gully is also partially blocked — we jet through from the gully access point to clear the connecting pipe to the next chamber or junction.
If the inspection chamber below the gully is silted or obstructed, we clear it with a combination of jetting and manual removal. After clearing, we run water through to confirm that flow has been restored through the full length of the pipe, not just at the trap. Where a cover or frame is damaged, we note it and can quote for repair or replacement at the same visit.
Inspection After Clearing
Most outside drain blockages are straightforward and do not require further investigation once cleared. If, however, the gully blocks repeatedly in a short period despite clearing, or if the problem appears at the same time as drainage difficulties within the property, there may be an underlying cause in the pipework. We can inspect the connecting pipe with a CCTV camera or a rod probe to check for partial collapse, root ingress, or a gradient problem — a pipe laid without adequate fall will always be prone to silting, regardless of how often it is cleared.
Properties in Wolverhampton's interwar estates — Bushbury and Low Hill in particular — often have original clay surface-water pipes that have settled over the decades. A flat or back-falling section collects every flush of debris rather than allowing it to pass through. In these cases, a one-off repair to re-grade the affected section is a more lasting solution than repeated clearing.
