Why Hard Water Makes It Worse

Wolverhampton's mains supply is classified as hard water. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in the supply deposit limescale on any surface the water contacts — including the inside of drain pipes. In older cast-iron or clay waste pipes, this scale builds up on the already-rough pipe walls, progressively narrowing the bore year on year.

Hard water also changes how soap behaves. In soft water, soap lathers well and rinses cleanly. In hard water, it reacts with the dissolved minerals to form an insoluble compound known as soap curd — a waxy, grey substance that does not rinse away. Soap curd sticks to pipe walls and to the limescale already there, creating a surface that hair clings to far more readily than a smooth, clean pipe. The result is a blockage that forms faster, is harder to shift by hand, and returns more quickly after clearing if the underlying build-up is not addressed.

Clearing Method

We start by removing accessible hair from the drain opening and the trap beneath the bath. Many bath blockages are resolved at this stage, but where the build-up is further into the pipe — or where slow drainage persists after clearing the trap — we use mechanical clearance tools or high-pressure jetting to clear the full pipe run.

Where limescale is a contributing factor, we assess whether descaling is needed alongside the clearance. Jetting at high pressure will shift a hair and soap curd blockage cleanly; where the pipe bore has narrowed due to scale, a descaling head or chemical descaler may be required first to restore the internal diameter before jetting through. After clearing, we run water through the drain to confirm full flow has been restored.

Recurring Bath Blockages

If a bath blocks regularly despite clearing, the likely cause is a narrowed pipe bore rather than an accumulation of hair alone. Once the internal diameter is reduced by limescale, even a small amount of hair or soap curd is enough to cause slow draining or a full blockage. Clearing the visible blockage is a temporary fix in this situation — the pipe bore itself needs restoring.

Descaling addresses the root cause rather than just the symptom. Where the pipe is old cast iron in a Victorian or Edwardian property — common in areas like Heath Town and Blakenhall — a CCTV inspection after descaling can confirm the pipe condition and whether relining would prevent the problem from returning.
