Signs of a Blocked Sewer

The clearest sign of a sewer blockage is that several fixtures are affected at the same time. You might notice the toilet flushing slowly, the bath taking a long time to empty, and the kitchen sink backing up — all within a short period. Running one fixture can cause gurgling in another, as air displaced in the blocked pipe escapes wherever it can find a path.

Other signs include sewage or foul water rising up through an external inspection chamber or gully, covers lifting due to back-pressure in the system, and a strong sewage smell near external drains or within the property at ground level. In older properties — particularly the Victorian and Edwardian terraces common across parts of Wolverhampton — shared drainage running beneath yards or shared passages means a neighbour's connection can compound the problem.

Common Causes

Fat and grease accumulation in the main drain is the most common cause of sewer blockages in residential properties. Grease poured down kitchen sinks cools as it travels along the pipe and solidifies into a growing plug. Over time this narrows the pipe bore until the flow is insufficient to carry solids, and a full blockage follows.

Wet wipes are the single biggest cause of sewer blockages nationally, including in Wolverhampton. Despite being marketed as flushable, they do not break down in water and bind with grease in the sewer to form large, solid masses. Tree roots entering the sewer through cracked or open joints are another significant cause, particularly in areas with mature street trees or garden trees close to the drain run. Displaced pipe sections — where ground movement has caused joints to separate — cause blockages by creating steps in the pipe that catch solids.

High-Pressure Jetting

High-pressure water jetting is the primary method for clearing sewer blockages. Our equipment forces water at up to 4,000 PSI through a flexible hose fitted with a specialist rotating nozzle. The forward-cutting jets break up the blockage while the rearward jets propel the hose forward and simultaneously scour the pipe walls clean. Grease, solids, root masses, and compacted debris are cut through and flushed downstream to the main sewer.

Jetting is effective on clay, vitrified clay, PVC, and cast-iron sewer pipes — all of which are present in Wolverhampton's varied housing stock. Where a blockage is particularly solid or compacted, we may use rodding to create an initial passage before jetting through.

CCTV Survey After Clearing

Clearing the immediate blockage restores flow, but it does not tell you why the blockage occurred or whether it is likely to recur. If the sewer was severely blocked, if it is a recurring problem, or if root intrusion or ground movement is suspected, we recommend a CCTV survey after the clearance. The camera travels the pipe and provides a live view — confirming the pipe is clear, identifying any structural defects, and locating any joints that roots have entered. A written report with video is available, suitable for insurers or for planning any follow-up repairs.

Severn Trent and Sewer Responsibility

Since 2011, Severn Trent Water have been responsible for the maintenance and repair of shared sewers — those serving more than one property — even where the sewer passes through private land. If the blocked section is a shared sewer, Severn Trent are responsible for clearing it at no charge. Private drains serving a single property remain the owner's responsibility.
