Private Drain vs Shared Sewer

The distinction matters because it determines who is responsible for the repair and who pays. A drain is the pipe that carries waste from a single property — from your house to the boundary of your land. It is yours to maintain. A lateral drain continues from that boundary point to connect with the public sewer; this became Severn Trent's responsibility following changes to the Water Industry Act in 2011. A shared sewer is any pipe that serves two or more properties, regardless of where it runs — again, Severn Trent's responsibility since the 2011 transfer.

Repair Methods

Where the sewer retains its shape — cracked clay joints, hairline fractures, minor displacement — we install a resin liner from the inside. The liner is impregnated with two-part epoxy, fed through an existing access point, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured into a rigid, jointless lining. No excavation, no reinstatement, and the pipe is back in service the same day. In Wolverhampton's hard-water area, the preparation cleaning is important: limescale that has built up on the inside wall of older clay and concrete pipes has to be removed before the liner will bond correctly.

Where the sewer has collapsed — pipe sections displaced, voids forming in the surrounding ground — excavation is the only option. We keep targeted excavations as narrow and precise as possible, opening only the damaged section rather than the full run. New pipe is laid at the correct gradient, access chambers are reinstated or upgraded, and the surface above is made good. We manage the relevant notices where required. For landlords with obligations under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act, we provide a written report of the condition of the drainage and the repair work carried out — suitable for a compliance file or a property management record. Insurance claims for sewer damage require documentation of the fault and the repair; we provide this as standard.
